Liverpool fans have taken to Twitter to express their surprise after a reliable journalist claimed back-up goalkeeper Danny Ward will be given the chance to challenge for the No1 spot next season.
Writing in the Liverpool Echo, Ian Doyle claimed Wales international Ward will be given an extended chance in pre-season after Jurgen Klopp was left “hugely impressed” with him since the squad re-convened at the start of last week.
The 25-year-old is now said to be in the “box seat” to the start the 2018-19 campaign in goal ahead of Loris Karius and Simon Mignolet, which has prompted fans of the club to take to social media in their droves.

This is so depressing. He was third choice last season and suddenly he’s good enough to be our no 1?!!

Klopp needs someone to shake some sense into him. Ward is not the answer. 60 mil is not a lot for Alison or Oblak if we get 15 mil each for Mignolet & Karius. Or if it comes down to GK or Fekir I’ll go for a GK #LFC

COMMENTARY:
There is considerable surprise among Liverpool fans that Ward has been catapulted into contention for the number one. The Welshman made just a single first-team appearance last season, when he was number three behind Karius and Mignolet, after spending the previous campaign in the Championship on loan to Huddersfield. Certainly, neither Karius and Mignolet are good enough to be the main man. Both have had upteen chances and failed. Karius looks mentally shot, even though Klopp has offered him a chance at rehabilitation following his May horrors in Kiev, when concussion was provided as an explanation for his calamitous performance in the Champions League final. Can Ward succeed where Karius and Mignolet failed? It’s probably a case of now or never for the Wales international, and he has the major advantage of having none of the baggage of the two senior men.
