Liverpool are in “very advanced” talks to sign Roma goalkeeper Alisson after tabling a huge bid, according to Gianluca Di Marzio.

The Sky Sports journalist reported on his personal website that the Merseyside giants have offered the Serie A club £62.2million including bonuses for the Brazil international.

Di Marzio explains that Roma are ready to sell Alisson after Anfield manager Jurgen Klopp intervened to hold personal talks with the player but they are holding out for £66.6million to finalise the deal.

Good move for Liverpool?

The Merseyside giants have already completed some mightily impressive summer business, with Fabinho joining from Monaco to replace Emre Can and Naby Keita arriving in a deal initially agreed last summer. Both players are set for regular starting roles, as would another major target, the Lyon playmaker Nabil Fekir. But the capture of Alisson would be the most significant of all. Liverpool have been hamstrung by the performances of Loris Karius and Simon Mignolet in recent years, and there is the clear sense that the club cannot triumph in the elite competitions without a consistently reliable number one. Alisson fits the bill perfectly and has the class and experience to make an immediate and longlasting impact.

Likely to happen?

If Sky transfer king Di Marzio reports the deal is close, you can bet your life Liverpool are just days away from signing the player who would be the second most expensive capture in their history after the £75million January signing of Virgil van Dijk. Crucially, Chelsea have not upped their own bid and the player has held talks with Klopp about where he would fit into the manager’s plans. All signs point towards Alisson signing by the 9 August cut-off.
