English Championship side Rotherham are plotting a permanent transfer swoop for Rangers defender Lee Hodson this summer after Steven Gerrard sanctioned his temporary departure, according to the Star.

The newspaper claim on their website that although the new Light Blues boss has given the green light for 5’7″ (source: Transfermarkt) Hodson to leave Ibrox temporarily, a full move to Rotherham could take place, with the Millers keen on securing the full back’s capture on either terms.

Hodson only managed to make nine appearances for the Gers last season and Gerrard is said not to fancy using him in his squad having taken over this summer.

Good move for Rangers?

If Hodson has no future at the club, then there is no reason to be sending him out on loan over a permanent deal.

Perhaps Gerrard feels he needs the option of recalling Hodson in case of an emergency, but surely it would make more sense to sell the 26-year-old and bring in someone who he actually wants playing for the club.

Rotherham might not be able to pay the sort of money that Rangers are looking for, but that should not stop them from giving the green light in case a bid matching their valuation comes in.

Likely to happen?

It all depends on whether Rotherham are offering an appropriate fee for his capture, and whether Gerrard is willing to let Hodson leave on a permanent basis.

It certainly seems feasible, but nothing is ever simple when Rangers are involved.

One to watch as the summer progresses.
