Leeds United have reignited a summer swoop for Carpi striker Jerry Mbakogu as talks with the Italian club lead to a potential cut price deal, according to Il Mattino.

The Italian newspaper, as translated by reliable news outlet Sport Witness, claim in their print edition that after seeing the deadline pass for a £3.1million purchase clause, the two clubs have come together to try and meet on a more agreeable fee.

It is stated that discussions are back underway and that the Serie B side would be willing to let their 25-year-old hitman leave for a cut-price of £1.5million (€1.8million), which would represent over a 50 per cent slash from the original agreed price.

Good move for Leeds?

There will have been much scratching of heads over why Leeds were about to spend over £3million on securing, putting it bluntly, a bang average striker from a second tier Italian side.

Six goals in 26 Serie B appearances hardly screams out must-buy talent, and it is no surprise that the Whites pulled out of the agreed deal.

However, is £1.5million any better? Not really, for it could still turn out to be a waste of money when there are more proven talents out there.

Better to put that £1.5million to investing in some quality, rather than cutting corners and risking it.

Likely to happen?

Leeds certainly seem keen on bringing him in, and they would not be reigniting discussions over a swoop were they not wanting to sign him after prolonged negotiations on the previous price.

The cut price could see the Whites push this one through sooner rather than later.
