Leeds United are still in the hunt for former Hull City striker Abel Hernandez as they mull over the possibility of meeting his big demands, according to reliable journalist Phil Hay.

The reputable Yorkshire Evening Post reporter claims on his personal Twitter account that the Whites are not out of the running for the newly-available free agent, but that the overall cost, which will include agent fees, bonuses and wages, will result in a hefty price tag.

It is stated that Leeds are now considering whether or not to push through a move or call off the chase for the hitman, who has netted at a rate of a-goal-per-two-games in the Championship, 49 appearances resulting in 28 goals, with new manager Marcelo Bielsa said to be keen on Derby County striker Matej Vydra.

Opinion

As much as fans would love it, Andrea Radrizzani is not a source of unlimited funds and the Whites must be run on a strict budget going forward. If a deal for Hernandez is not financially viable, or will hinder their chances of securing future signings at Elland Road, then it is not a risk worth taking. Yes, the club do need proven Championship talent but it must be done within their means, and if his capture means other areas of the squad will have to go without strengthening then the reward does not outweigh the cost. Fans can be certain that having such a talent available on a free is tempting those at the top of Elland Road, which is why they have not pulled out of a deal just yet, and they will be working hard to try and come to some sort of agreement with the Uruguay international.
