Celtic must finally sort out their lack of options at left-back and sign Southampton defender Sam McQueen this summer, giving some much needed support and competition to fan favourite Kieran Tierney.

Tierney, 21, made a whopping 55 appearances across all competitions for the Hoops last season as they won the domestic treble for a second year in a row, but Rodgers was very lucky that the Scotland international did not suffer a long-term injury because he has no real back-up option at left-back.

In the way that Celtic play, Tierney is such a key player and Rodgers needs to look into finding a player who can serve not only as a back-up to the highly-rated Parkhead star, but also to add some extra competition to his spot in the starting line-up to maybe get him playing even better.

Southampton’s McQueen, 23, is the perfect option and Brendan Rodgers would be sealing a genius bit of transfer business if he was able to pry him away from the Premier League club.

The Bhoys already have some kind of working relationship with the Saints, having sold a great number of players to the south coast club over the years with the most recent being Stuart Armstrong this summer.

But now it’s about time that Rodgers uses the Saints to his advantage and snap up fringe player McQueen, who could more than certainly do a job in his squad.

According to statistics website Spotrac, the former England Under-21 international earns just £18,000-a-week so he should be affordable to the Hoops.

He is not only just able to play at left-back, but he can play in a more advanced role on the left-wing.

The Saints flyer proved just how good in attack he can be in their Under-23s last term when he scored six goals in eight Premier League 2 outings.

Celtic must look to get this business done as soon as possible because they have been all to quiet in the transfer market so far and a player like McQueen will surely be attracting attention elsewhere.
