Rangers defender Bruno Alves is on the brink of securing an exit from the club as he undergoes a medial with Italian side Parma, according to Sky journalist Gianluca Di Marzio.

The reporter, who is heralded as a transfer king as a result of his regular reliable information, claims on his personal website that the 6’2″ (source: Transfermarkt) is undergoing a medical on Wednesday before putting pen to paper on a deal which will see his year-long stint at Ibrox come to an end.

It is stated the two clubs have come to an agreement to see the Portuguese veteran move from Glasgow to Italy, having seen his World Cup hopes come to an end with defeat to Uruguay.

Opinion

Alves was an expensive arrival last summer and his wages will have no doubt been a major drain on the club’s resources. He performed averagely during his time at Ibrox but while his experience of the game was helpful, his lack of pace and mobility left him very vulnerable to tricky attackers. Getting him off the books may have been one of Steven Gerrard’s priorities, for his exit now leaves a big gap for new recruits to fill. However, it does leave the Light Blues looking rather thin at the heart of defence, despite the arrival of Connor Goldson from Brighton, and another new face to help keep quality in depth might well be on its way. Rangers fans will likely not be too unhappy to see him go, having divided opinion during his year long stay at the club, and if his exit does see the squad strengthened over the coming weeks, then it is a sale that will be well taken.
