West Brom are closing in on the signing of Scunthorpe defender Conor Towsnend, according to Iron Bru.

The reliable Scunthorpe website claims that the Iron have accepted Albion’s bid for the 25-year-old left-back and that personal terms have also been sorted for him to switch to The Hawthorns.

It is understood that Townsend is expected to become a West Brom player this weekend as Darren Moore wraps up yet another addition to his squad.

Good move for West Brom?

The Baggies certainly need extra depth at left-back. While Allan Nyom and Chris Brunt can do a job there, Kieran Gibbs is the only natural left-back in the squad and Moore has clearly made it a priority to strengthen this area.

Townsend has a lot of experience in the lower reaches of the English Football League and non-league, and after a solid season at Glanford Park, it is probably about time he makes the step up to the Championship.

He made 36 appearances across all competitions for Scunthorpe last season, scoring four goals and supplying six assists in the process.

The former Grimsby and Hull player will certainly be a solid back-up option to Gibbs.

Likely to happen?

It certainly seems that the deal is being close to completion with Scunthorpe accepting West Brom’s bid and Townsend agreeing his personal terms.

It sounds as though all that remains is for him to put pen to paper and undergo a medical over the weekend.

As West Brom play Coventry on Saturday, this deal will more than likely be done later in the day or on Sunday.
