West Bromwich Albion have opened negotiations with Brentford for midfielder Romaine Sawyers, according to the Express & Star.

The outlet claim that West Brom have identified Sawyers as a possible replacement for Belgian midfielder Nacer Chadli, who has a £17million relegation release clause in his contract.

The report states that Baggies boss Darren Moore is keen to keep Chadli, but is ready to move for the Brentford playmaker if any interested clubs trigger the ex-Spurs man’s relegation release clause.

26-year-old Sawyers came through the Albion youth system before being released in 2013. He was then signed by Walsall before moving on to Brentford in 2016. The St. Kitts & Nevis international made 44 appearances for the Bees last season, scoring five goals and providing five assists (TransferMarkt).

Good move for West Brom?

This could be a great move for West Brom.

Darren Moore knows that he’s short in midfield, so targeting Brentford’s Romaine Sawyers was only natural as he is a gifted midfielder who is capable of opening teams up and scoring goals himself.

The team has lost some technical players over the last few seasons and need to bring in some creativity to try and get out of the Championship at the first time of asking.

West Brom will be kicking themselves that they released him in the first place!

Would be a good signing for WBA.

Likely to happen?

With Sawyers being a former Albion player who was released, you would imagine that he would be keen to come back to the club and show people what he’s made of.

Also, the fee shouldn’t be too big for The Baggies to afford and personal terms shouldn’t be an issue, so there aren’t many things holding up this deal.

Even if Nacer Chadli stays at the club, this deal is likely to happen.
