A section of Leeds United fans have reacting on Twitter after it was confirmed that Andy Lonergan has had his contract terminated after an agreement was reached with the club.

Lonergan, 34, was re-signed by the Whites last summer but he only made nine appearances in all competitions in his second spell at Elland Road, which has now ended as confirmed by the Yorkshire giants’ official Twitter account and website.

Some Leeds fans have been left worried by the decision to let Lonergan go before signing up a new goalkeeper.

One fan claimed that it’s “worrying”.

Lonergan has joined a growing list of exits that have been confirmed by Leeds so far this summer.

Felix Wiedwald has joined Frankfurt in Germany, Lewie Coyle has gone on loan to Fleetwood and Pawel Cibicki has left on loan to join Molde while youngsters like Romario Vieira and Moise Kroma were released.

OPINION

It’s no great surprise to see Longergan go and Leeds must surely have someone ready to come in if they were willing to let the 34-year-old leave Elland Road by terminating his contract. It’s not been a happy return to the club for Lonergan, whose game-time was limited and when he did get the chance to play, he was less than impressive. Bailey Peacock-Farrell embarrassed him and Wiedwald towards the end of last season and it’s hard to see Lonergan signing as a number one choice goalkeeper for another Championship club before the end of the summer transfer window. He may have to move to League One if that is what he wants.
