Swansea defender Alfie Mawson is the most likely next player to be signed up by West Ham, according to Football Whispers.

The football news site rounds up transfer rumours from around the world and rate the chances of them materialising out of five, with Mawson, 24, being ranked as the likeliest next player to join Manuel Pellegrini’s Hammers overhaul at 3.8 out of 5.

The left-footed powerhouse defender, who is known for his strength and ability in the air, made 44 appearances in all competitions last season as Swansea were relegated to the Championship.

The Daily Mail has previously reported that the Welsh club want over £20million for Mawson and that Wolves are also interested in signing him.

OPINION

Mawson would be a very good signing for West Ham, but it is hard to see the club spending over £20million for a defender when Pellegrini has already signed up both Issa Diop and Fabian Balbuena. Diop was a club record signing at £22million, so if he is going to sign another centre-back to partner him, it’s unlikely that it’s going to be for a similar fee. The Hammers have also spent big on other areas of the squad without selling anyone except Reece Burke. There is not a limitless amount of money in Pellegrini’s transfer budget, so if he wants another centre-back, it may have to be a cheaper one. Mawson would definitely be a good fit though. He can play on the left-hand side of a back three if Pellegrini wants to play that system or will make a good partner with Diop or Balbuena in a standard back four.
