Rangers defender Lee Hodson has been told by Steven Gerrard to find a new club, according to the Scottish Sun.

The newspaper claim Ibrox boss Gerrard has informed the full-back, 26, he is surplus to requirements and the club are ready to offer him a pay deal to quit this summer.

The Scottish Sun report that new St Mirren manager Alan Stubbs is keen on signing Hodson following their return to the Scottish Premiership.

Good move for Rangers?

Yes. Hodson is a solid enough performer at Scottish top-flight level but, as Gerrard has realised, he lacks the calibre to be a regular for a club with title ambitions. Capped 23 times by Northern Ireland, the 2016 signing from MK Dons has made 27 appearances for the club but only nine of those were last season as he slipped behind the likes of James Tavernier and Declan John in the pecking order for the wide defensive roles. Hodson lacks the mobility and attacking power of that duo, and his more prosaic qualities mean Gerrard wants rid, as he continues the mass overhaul of the squad that fell short last season.

Likely to happen?

Yes. It is surely not a matter of if Hodson will leave, but ‘when’. The Rangers hierarchy are said to be working on a deal in which they will pay some of the remaining year on the Irishman’s contract in order to hasten his exit. Not great business from the Light Blues, but they’re left with little choice given clubs are not falling over themselves to hand the defender a contract that matches what he currently gets.
