Rangers could be set for a six-figure windfall of £800,000 if former player Martyn Waghorn makes his reported £8million move to Derby, according to the Scottish Sun.

The newspaper states that Rangers inserted a 10 per cent sell on fee clause in Waghorn’s transfer when he left the club for Ipswich for the paltry sum of £250,000 last summer.

After a stunning debut season for the Tractor Boys, Waghorn now looks set to join up with Frank Lampard’s Derby side, with an £8million deal said to be close.

That move would trigger Rangers’ sell on clause, giving Lampard’s old England team-mate Steven Gerrard a bit of extra money to spend this summer.

OPINION

Rangers were wise to insert the clause in Waghorn’s contract. He was an excellent player for them during his time north of the border and he’s only continued that form with Ipswich, scoring 16 goals and grabbing 13 assists in 44 games last season. That sort of form was never going to go unnoticed, and now Ipswich’s loss could very well turn into Rangers’ gain. The £8million price tag seems high on the face of it, but really it falls in line with the current market. Players with worse goalscoring records than Waghorn have gone for a lot more. It’s good business for Ipswich, and it’s turned out to be good business for Rangers, too, despite them settling for a fraction of what the 28-year-old was worth last summer. This sort of anticipatory thinking is what is needed at Ibrox, and these sell on clauses should be a priority for the club in all future sales.
