Tottenham would prefer Manchester United striker Anthony Martial to be involved in any potential deal for Toby Alderweireld, according to the Independent.

The outlet claims that Spurs are demanding that United meet their £55million evaluation for the Belgian defender, or include Martial in the deal, with their preference being the latter.

The report reveals that the 29-year-old is Jose Mourinho’s top target this summer, with their fall-back options being one of Leicester City’s Harry Maguire or Internazionale’s Milan Skriniar.

Mauricio Pochettino’s side have failed to make any signings this summer, but have tied a number of their star players to new extended contracts including Son Heung-min, Erik Lamela and Harry Kane.

Good signing for Tottenham?

Not just good, this would be a game-changing signing for Tottenham.

Forget all the transfer business that they haven’t done, forget just new contract announcements, all would be forgotten if they could secure the signing of Manchester United striker Anthony Martial.

The Frenchman would make Spurs genuine title contenders and would add something special to their already very talented squad.

Last season, Toby Alderweireld was out of favour for the second half of it, with Davinson Sanchez and Jan Vertonghen being preferred, so why not try and include the Belgian in any deal? It’s just common sense.

Likely to happen?

Not likely.

Jose Mourinho does not sound keen on the idea of Martial joining a Premier League rival, but if he’s not going to use him then the 22-year-old has every right to try and succeed with another team.

It sounds like United don’t want to pay the reported £55million fee either, so this one might run and run until the end of the window, or until either player demands to leave.

It’s a waiting game now.
