There would be few fans at Leeds United who would be able to argue against the fact that their squad is completely unbalanced heading into the new campaign – and that is something for manager Marcelo Bielsa to address immediately as the transfer window heads towards its closure.

With a distinct lack of attacking options up top, it would seem natural that the Argentinian boss would be hunting a new centre forward, and while that certainly seems the case, hearing of a potential new central midfielder will have many at Elland Road scratching their heads.

Bielsa has no less than 10 options who can operate in the middle of the park, albeit offering different qualities, but that should still not take away from the fact that another new face for the role is hardly needed – unless one or two are heading out the door.

With the Daily Mail claiming that the Whites have seen a bid for Polish defensive midfielder Taras Romanczuk, a new name to add to the list of those Leeds are reportedly hunting, rejected, it certainly seems as though at least one, if not more, of the current options should start packing their bags – and there are a quartet fighting for survival.

Ouasim Bouy, Luke Murphy, Eunan O’Kane, Vurnon Anita have all been missing for much of the pre-season campaign, both through selection and injury, and it seems almost certain that a couple, if not all, will be on their way come the end of summer.

The quartet face a serious battle to prove their worth to Bielsa and convince him they are worthy of a place in the first team – but with just weeks to go, it could be a case of too little, too late.

The writing is on the wall – will any of them survive the axe?
