Aston Villa have signed Atletico Madrid goalkeeper Andre Moreira, becoming the first transfer under the new billionaire owners, according to The Mirror.

The newspaper revealed on their website that the 22-year-old has already passed a medical at Bodymoor Heath and will battle with Jed Steer for the number one jersey.

The Portuguese shot stopper has been a regular for loan moves, with Villa becoming the sixth team he has been loaned out to by his parent club.

With a whole host of financial problems just a few weeks ago, it seems as if manager Steve Bruce will have steady backing from the wealthy owners, Nassef Sawaris and Wes Edens, in the transfer market.

OPINION

Villa needed a new goalkeeper after missing out on Sam Johnstone to rivals West Brom and Moreira will provide good competition for current number one Jed Steer. He may not have valuable experience at such a young age but certainly has the potential to become the club’s number one goalkeeper and make the shirt his own. If he shows that potential to the fans, it could certainly result in a permanent deal at the end of the season, ending his marathon of loan moves. However, Moreira did not play at three of the five loan clubs he was sent to so Villa is likely to be the toughest test of his career so far and will be expected to perform on a consistent basis when called upon. The transfer is hopefully the very beginning of a new journey for Villa supporters after the introduction of the new owners has eased those worries from a few weeks ago.
