Tottenham left back Davies says squad aren’t worried by lack of spending

|

Tottenham Hotspur left-back Ben Davies has said that the Spurs squad are not worried about the lack of spending by the club this summer.

Mauricio Pochettino’s side remain the only top six team not to spend any money so far this summer, despite a midfield injury crisis.

However, Davies has stated that the players are unconcerned by the quiet nature of the club’s transfer business: “It doesn’t worry us,” he told the London Evening Standard.

“We see all the teams around us adding – but that’s football. We don’t worry about that. All we have to worry about is what goes on behind closed doors for us.

“I think we’ve showed that we could [compete with the top six]. The squad is the same at the moment but we’ve got a lot of quality here and we can show that again this season.

“Of course the teams around us are going to strengthen but new faces doesn’t necessarily mean that teams are going to be better.”

OPINION

The Tottenham squad on paper looks very strong, so in that regard Davies and the rest of the players are right not to be worried. For supporters, though, it’s a whole different ball game. They want their team to strengthen not remain stagnant, especially when all the teams around Spurs are spending big money on quality players. Liverpool, on paper, look to have moved past Pochettino’s men in the Manchester City chase, while Arsenal have gotten better as well. A lot of Tottenham’s key players, such as Harry Kane, Dele Alli, Christian Eriksen and Davinson Sanchez are all fairly young, so the team is likely to improve naturally over time without any new additions. Whether that improvement will be enough to keep them within touching distance of City, Liverpool, United etc. is unknown at this time, however. A signing or two wouldn’t go amiss at White Hart Lane in the next week, though, that’s for sure.
