Rangers are set to green light the temporary exit of midfielder Jason Holt to League One outfit Fleetwood Town to reunite with former Gers flop Joey Barton, according to a club insider.

Twitter account EstConsultancy, who have established themselves as a reputable source of inside information at Ibrox, claim that despite loan from the likes of Plymouth Argyle, it is the Cod Army who are going to take the 5’5″ (source: Transfermarkt) on a loan swoop, with Barton following Steven Gerrard and Frank Lampard and taking the leap into his management role.

Holt and Barton were team mates during the latter’s short and failed stay at Ibrox, and made 33 appearances across all competitions.

Opinion

It seems as though Gerrard has not quite decided whether 25-year-old Holt is good enough to be part of the first team at Ibrox, hence the loan exit to Highbury. The north west England club are an ambitious lot and will be happy to have secured a player of Holt’s calibre to try and push them to success in the third tier of English football, but it is something of a step down for Holt after featuring so heavily for the Light Blues over the past season. Whether he can do enough to change Gerrard’s mind and force his way back into the first team reckoning remains to be seen, but it seems strange that if he has been deemed not good enough that a permanent sale has not been sanctioned. Either way, at least he knows he will be playing regularly, with the arrival of Scott Arfield cutting his chances at Ibrox significantly.
