Rangers are no longer looking to sign Swansea forward Oli McBurnie after a £4million bid was tabled by the Glasgow club last month, according to the Scottish Sun.

The newspaper describes McBurnie, 21, as a ‘former Rangers target’ after it was reported that Steven Gerrard tabled a seven-figure bid for the Scotland international in May.

However in a major development, it seems that the Light Blues are no longer pursuing the centre-forward, who was in stunning form in front of goal while on loan at Barnsley in the second half of the season.

OPINION

It was always going to be hard for Rangers to sign McBurnie. Swansea’s relegation from the Premier League was probably what priced them out of a move for the Leeds-born striker as the Welsh club will no doubt look to use him in the Championship next season thanks to his form at Barnsley. While on loan at Oakwell, McBurnie scored nine goals in 17 appearances, but could not help the Tykes from avoiding relegation to League One. That form no doubt bumped up his valuation and gave him the Championship experience that the Swans will need next season. Rangers will now have to look at other striker targets for the summer. Gerrard may want to use his links to Liverpool to snap up someone like Dominic Solanke on a season-long loan. The one-time England international would surely be available on loan given how Jurgen Klopp barely started him this season.
