Rangers midfielder Jason Holt will hold talks with Joey Barton’s Fleetwood Town today (Monday), according to the Scottish Sun.

The newspaper claims that Steven Gerrard has told Holt, 25, that he can join up with the rest of the Gers squad at pre-season training if he fails to agree terms with the English League One club after the former Hearts midfielder stayed at home while his team-mates jetted out to Spain at the weekend.

Holt, who was a mainstay of the side in the 2017/18 season by appearing 32 times across all competitions, now looks to be heading towards the Ibrox exit with talks planned with his former Rangers team-mate Barton.

Good move for Rangers?

Holt made a lot of appearances last season, and his performances weren’t all that bad.

During the early part of Graeme Murty’s time in charge, he was probably one of the best central midfielders for a period and put in some really strong displays against the likes of Aberdeen and Hibernian.

The 25-year-old is very much an under-rated member of the squad and it would not be a shock to see Gerrard wanting to keep hold of him.

However with players like Scott Arfield and Ovie Ejaria already signed up, there will not be many first team chances for Holt next season and it does make sense to sell him.

Likely to happen?

Fleetwood will certainly be an appealing move for Holt.

He will get to play for Barton, someone who he played alongside at Ibrox a couple of years back, and the League One club will surely be able to offer him a key role in their midfield.

With chances bound to be limited at Ibrox, it’s likely that the midfielder will agree to a move to Highbury.
