Talks are scheduled between Spartak Moscow and the agent of Slaven Belupo centre back Nikola Katic as Rangers chase the Croatian defender’s capture, according to the Daily Mail.

The newspaper claim that the Gers have already made an approach for the 21-year-old and still hold interest despite competition from Russia, with the Serbian side looking for a fee of around £2million for their 6’3″ (source: Transfermarkt) colossus.

The young defender was handed his first international cap for Croatia back in 2017 in what has been his only appearance for his country so far, and his appearances for his club have reportedly resulted in Spartak scheduling imminent discussions, although there is still no offer on the table from any club.

Opinion

Rangers know that they desperately need some reinforcements in defence and there will likely be a whole host of names linked with a move to Ibrox this summer. Katic seems a bright young talent but does he have what it takes to make the grade in Scotland, moving from a side who finished just sixth in Serbia’s top flight? The Gers have pulled off some brilliant pieces of business when it comes to unproven talents but at the same time there is every chance this move will end in disaster. At £2million he is not a massively expensive deal but with the Light Blues working off a tight budget, it could be a costly move if he does not live up to expectations over the next couple of months. It seems as though they are lagging behind Spartak Moscow if they are serious on snapping him up this summer, and they will have to get crunch talks underway sooner rather than later if that is the case.
