Eduardo Herrera is on the verge of leaving Rangers to return to Mexico, according to the Scottish Sun.

The newspaper claims via their website that the 29-year-old is set to join Liga MX outfit Toluca, one year after he was snapped up by Pedro Caixinha at Ibrox for £1.5million – a fee reported by the Daily Record.

Herrera was among a bunch of players that was not picked to travel with the rest of Steven Gerrard’s squad in their pre-season training camp in Spain.

Good move for Rangers?

Even if it’s a free transfer, this is a good move by Rangers.

They need to get deadwood like Herrera off the books as soon as possible to stop wasting money on wages and free up funds to continue strengthening Gerrard’s newly-inherited squad.

The Gers boss has been busy this summer already but is yet to really strengthen his attacking options after prioritising additions to his midfield and defence first.

Herrera’s exit could fee up the funds to sign Umar Sadiq, who is reported to be on his way to Ibrox on loan from Roma.

Likely to happen?

There’s a good chance that Herrera will be leaving Ibrox this summer, regardless of where he ends up, but a move back to Mexico definitely makes most sense for the former Pumas striker, who has been prolific in the past in Liga MX.

Hopefully for his sake his spell at Rangers hasn’t seen him lose his edge as scoring against his fellow countrymen and he can revive his career.
