Rangers have Angers midfielder Lassana Coulibaly on their radar as the Light Blues look to strengthen their options in midfield zone, according to The Scottish Sun.

The Malian international only moved to the Ligue 1 side last summer from French side Bastia and has a contract until 2021, but the report states that Steven Gerrard will look to bring the player to Ibrox on a season-long loan deal.

Coulibaly, who stands at 5’7″ (source: Transfermarkt) made a total of 22 appearances in France across all competitions last season scoring one goal and assisting three.

With Graham Dorrans returning back from the training camp in Spain through injury, it is a position in the side that is in need of acquisitions.

Good move for Rangers?

If they can land Coulibaly on a season-long then yes it’s a good move for the Gers.

The 22-year-old is young and strong but after only featuring as a bit part player last season it is hard to say whether he would be an upgrade on what they already have

With Dorrans a doubt for next season, there is a distinct lack of quality in the centre of the park and strengthening is needed.

Only on Thursday the Light Blues were being linked by Sky Sports with a move for Steven Davis, and it could be that Gerrard would be best investing his attention on the Southampton star as with so many new arrivals, he risks losing the Rangers identity – Davis would go some of the way to ensuring that remained intact.

Likely to happen?

Yes, this looks like deal that could come to fruition but only if they can sign him on a loan deal – if Angers want a fee for the midfielder then the Gers will walk away from the player.

As Coulibaly is still relatively untested at the highest level, the Gers will want to try before they buy the midfield ace and if they can, fans can expect a move to materialise over the course of the coming week.
