Leeds United have negotiated a transfer fee with Italian side Brescia for the sale of Marcus Antonsson this summer, according to the Yorkshire Evening Post.

The newspaper claim that the Whites have agreed a price for the 27-year-old with the Serie B outfit and that they are keen on wrapping up a two-year deal for the Swede, who appears to be on the brink of ending his two year stay at Elland Road.

The striker was sent out on loan to League One side Blackburn Rovers last season, leaving him with just 21 appearances and three goals for Leeds as new manager Marcelo Bielsa begins his clear out of the squad.

Opinion

There will be no tears shed by the Leeds faithful upon Antonsson’s exit, who never really looked like having the desired quality to make the expected impact at Elland Road. He struggled in the Championship and even failed to impose himself a league lower in England’s third tier, and with hopes of promotion under Bielsa, big improvements are needed. Antonsson will not be the only exit from Leeds and the mass exit is needed in order to clear up the wage bill and provide Bielsa with some extra transfer funds with which to bring in some new recruits. The only hope is that it is not a nominal fee that has been agreed for the Swedish forward’s sale, although it seems unlikely that a second tier Italian side will have the money to splash any serious cash on his capture. Could Leeds have waited until a wealthier club came calling? Perhaps, but the need for exits seems to be too great.
