A section of Newcastle United fans been left raging on Twitter after it was reported that their confirmed target Valon Berisha is heading to Lazio.

Sky Sports Italy reporter Gianluca di Marzio claimed via his personal website on Tuesday that Lazio are hoping to sign the Red Bull Salzburg attacker by the end of Wednesday after agreeing a £6.6million fee with the Austrian giants.

This comes not long after the 25-year-old confirmed that Newcastle have been looking into signing him for some time in an interview with Norwegian television station TV2.

“They’ve been following me for a long time. There is an interest there, but there is nothing on the table that I have to decide on yet. England is the dream and we will see what it will be like,” Berisha said when asked if the Magpies were interested in him.

Understandably, some Newcastle fans on Twitter are not best pleased, especially as Berisha was on fire last season, scoring 13 goals and supplying 11 assists in 45 appearances across all competitions.

One fan claimed that it’s “pathetic”.

OPINION

At least Newcastle have made a signing this summer, albeit Martin Dubravka who was expected to anyway. A lot of clubs have had slow starts to the summer, and that has to be down to the World Cup. Even though the summer transfer window has been shortened for Premier League clubs, it has not forced many into being super-active. As soon as the squad is back in pre-season training, Benitez will surely push on in his pursuit for new arrivals. It’s definitely annoying to miss out on Berisha, especially for as cheap as £6.6million as he looks to be a really talented winger. Hopefully someone else as good as him pops up this summer.
