Rangers manager Steven Gerrard has delivered a statement of intent ahead of the new campaign which supporters of the club will admire ahead of the new season.

The new boss has come into the role and is clearly keen to shake things up at Ibrox after witnessing what he described as a “grind” and “slog” in the Scottish Sun in the previous campaign.

Following a season where the Gers equalled a record number of home defeats since the First World War, the 38-year-old Liverpool legend is determined to address and rectify their poor form at Ibrox by instilling an aggressive side to their play that has been missing.

As quoted in the Scottish Sun the Light Blues boss gave some insight as to what their style of play would be next season and said: “I think it is difficult to put it into a couple of sentences what our style will be, but we will be aggressive.

“Out of possession I want my team to be aggressive. They have to be prepared to go where it hurts to defend the badge and the goal.

“I think the big problem at Rangers last year was that we conceded too many goals, sloppy goals, unnecessary goals. That is the reason why the season was a grind and a slog — and probably the reason I am here.”

OPINION:

If Steven Gerrard can turn their Ibrox fortunes around and make them as formidable a team to contend with as they were away from home, Rangers would be showing championship winning form. For whatever reason, the Light Blues struggled to perform in front of their own supporters in a stadium which many would consider a fortress. But that attitude and mental toughness were not there under first Pedro Caixinha and second Graeme Murty. Gerrard knows what it takes to succeed at the highest of levels and he will be hoping that he can transmit his know-how to his staff. Fans will be loving everything that is coming out of their club at the moment and statements from the 38-year-old boss will only endear him all the more to supporters as he clearly wants to see his players bleed blue blood for the Scottish giants and give their all in a way they failed to do under previous managers.
