Rangers are plotting on bringing former midfield star Steven Davis back to Ibrox from Premier League side Southampton this summer, according to Sky Sports.

The sports broadcaster claim on the live transfer blog on their website (28/06, 15:58) that the Light Blues are eyeing up a swoop for the 33-year-old as he enters the final year of his contract with the south coast side, with Steven Gerrard having already brought Allan McGregor back to the club on a free transfer from Hull City.

The midfielder made 200 appearances across all competitions for Rangers during a six-year spell in Glasgow, becoming a firm favourite among the fans before leaving in 2012.

Good move for Rangers?

There could well be a sentimental reasoning behind a potential swoop for Davis and Gerrard needs to decide whether he is really of the quality the Gers need right now.

His vast experience for both club and country could be important in the centre of the pitch as the Light Blues look to close the gap to Celtic, but an ankle injury during the latter half of last season limited his playing time, and as his legs start to go he could be a liability.

For the right price, this could be a smart move, but it is still a gamble.

Likely to happen?

Southampton seem likely to let him leave, and the Rangers faithful would likely welcome him back to Ibrox if the price is right.

Gerrard is building up a good mix of new blood and familiar faces in his first season with the club, and there is no doubt if Davis is available, he will at least ask the question.
