Rangers can forget their problems in the centre of defence this transfer window by adding one more name to their rearguard, Paul Huntingdon.

According to a report in The Sun, QPR manager and former England boss Steve McClaren is targeting the Preston North End defender with an offer thought to be in the region of £1million.

Not only should his price appeal to the Light Blues, but the 30-year-old’s form for the Lancashire outfit was key as North End only just missed out on a place in the playoff spots by two points.

With just one year left on his contract and the fact that Steven Gerrard is focused on strengthening the backline – a massive problem area in the side –  Huntingdon’s capture would not only not be too big a wrestle with the purse strings but it would also plug a leaky defence.

The 6’2″ stopper (source: Transfermarkt), who previously had spells with Leeds United and Newcastle United, made a total of 44 appearances as in the Championship last term only missing two games in the entirety of the campaign.

Huntingdon is a known leader, which is something that was missing throughout the 2017/18 season as the Gers struggled to cope with the pressure in their home matches, but had title-winning form away from Ibrox.

With personalities in the side such as the North End enforcer, who is a ready-made Rangers captain, the Light Blues would have the attitude and the quality to launch an assault on the league.

Gerrard has already signed Nikola Katic and Connor Goldson but with the 30-year-old alongside the duo, it would make the position complete.
