Former England manager Sven-Goran Eriksson has admitted that he, like Steven Gerrard, would have taken the Rangers job had it been offered to him as it is too big a job to turn down.

Gerrard only officially took command at Ibrox earlier this month but the club have wasted no time in the aftermath of Graeme Murty’s departure, who was brought in to replace Pedro Caixinha, by making a multitude of signings.

Only on Wednesday were the Glaswegian giants confirming that they had signed Connor Goldson from Brighton which came hot on the back of the capture of Nikola Katic from Slaven Belupo.

It would seem that Eriksson is slightly green with envy judging by his comments but fans may be breathing a sigh of relief to know that they have the Liverpool legend at the helm rather than the Swede.

Talking to Paddy Power News, as quoted in the Daily Record, the 70-year-old stunningly stated: “I think Steven Gerrard will make a great manager.

“Rangers is a very big job. A lot of people are saying it’s a gamble or a risk.

“But, if I were in his shoes, and I had got that opportunity at his age, I would take it, too. You have to, it’s too big to turn down.”

OPINION::

We are sure that Rangers fans, no matter how inexperienced Gerard is, would rather have him leading them out onto the field of play at Ibrox next season, rather than Eriksson. In spite of his years, the 70-year-old continues to be a big name in the game. The Swede has not managed since last summer when he left Chinese side Shenzhen, but with one Serie A title to his name to add to the four Italian cups, two Italian Super cups, three Portuguese championship title wins, and one Portuguese cup win, the Light Blues faithful will perhaps be reassured to know that they can call upon Eriksson if it all goes wrong with Gerrard – whether they could afford him though is another matter altogether, as it almost a nailed on certainty that he would come at a hefty price. There would also be question marks regarding the fact that he was the manager of England – rivals to the Scots.
