Former Celtic striker John Hartson has claimed that the Bhoys need to sign three or four players before the the end of the summer transfer window.

Hartson believes that the club needs a player that gets fans excited, and that Brendan Rodger’s summer target Odsonne Edouard may not be that player to do that job.

“I still think that Celtic really need to get three or four players in before the window shuts in August – and ideally you would want one of them to be a marquee signing,” Hartson said, as quoted by the Evening Times.

He added: “We haven’t seen much of him [Edouard], but what I will say is that if Brendan Rodgers is prepared to shell out the big bucks for him – and he’ll cost Celtic £10 million – then you have to say that he has done more than enough to be trusted on that one.

“I think we have seen glimpses of the potential the lad has. The exciting thing about him isn’t just the pace and the power and the technique but also his temperament. He seems able to keep his head when the pressure is on.”

OPINION

Celtic have been quiet compared to their rivals Rangers in this transfer window so far, and Rodgers will definitely have to sign three or four quality players to continue being one of the powerhouses of Scottish football. If he can get the signing of French centre-forward Edouard from Paris Saint-Germain wrapped up, then he is one step closer to seriously competing in domestic competitions such as the Champions League. The 20-year-old has performed well this season for Celtic, scoring six goals in 19 appearances across all competitions for the Hoops, and he will undoubtedly want to impress Rodgers once again once a move is finalised. With striker options also including Leigh Griffiths, the Celtic boss would be spoiled for choice if Edouard made the permanent move to Celtic Park, and would be the team to fear once the season gets started again. As for other areas of the squad, Rodgers does need one or two players adding to a defence that has underperformed at times in the last couple of years.
