Toby Alderweireld speaks about Tottenham future

|

Tottenham enforcer Toby Alderweireld has hinted that he could remain in London, despite heavy links suggesting he could leave for Old Trafford.

Speaking in an interview in the lead-up to the World Cup, as quoted by the Mirror, the Belgium international indicated that he could see himself playing for Spurs in the future.

“Yeah, why not?”, was the centre-half’s response when asked if he could be staying at Tottenham.

“I have two years left on my contract. I don’t know what is going to happen.”

The 29-year-old’s future has been under scrutiny of late, with some reports suggesting that he could be joining Manchester United in the immediate future.

OPINION

Although the Belgium international’s comments do appear incredibly nonchalant, they must be taken seriously. It is thought that Alderweireld does not want to sign a new extension due to Levy’s wage structure at the club, limiting what a player can earn. So far Harry Kane is the only player to be earning big money, similar to the level that the 29-year-old desires. However, another club might be able to offer him that sum, with Manchester United not shying away from mega-contracts. Alderweireld is not out of a contract at Tottenham, and he could put himself in the shop window with another solid performance at this year’s World Cup. It is understood that Pochettino values his enforcer at around the £50million mark, which, in this market, is good value for a bonafide Premier League centre-half. Only time will tell where Alderweireld will be playing, but it appears he is not adverse to the idea at staying in London. Spurs fans can remain hopeful… for now.
