Primary Tottenham Hotspur target Matthijs de Ligt has handed in his transfer request at Ajax, according to Mundo Deportivo.

Tottenham have been handed a boost, as their long pursuit of Matthijs de Ligt has taken a major step in the right direction.

The Ajax star has handed in a transfer request, and wants to leave the Dutch giants in the wake of Justin Kluivert getting his big-money move to Rome.

Tottenham can now step up their interest in the defender, although reports indicate that they will have to part ways with well over £45million to land him.

OPINION

Tottenham fans can begin to get excited, as De Ligt seems headed for the Ajax exit door. A number of players have been unsettled since Kluivert’s exit, with Barcelona target Frenkie De Jong also handing in a transfer request. The transfer sum being thrown around does seem a little steep considering the player’s age, but his consistent ball playing output in recent years has given just cause for clubs to part ways with that sort of money. Another factor to consider with regards to this possible deal is that Toby Alderweireld could be on his way out, with Manchester United heavily interested. This could allow room for De Ligt to form a reunion with former team-mate Davinson Sanchez, who joined Spurs from Ajax last summer for a then club record fee. This deal could be made by Mauricio Pochettino, who is an incredibly attractive manager for young players, having aided in the development of many of Tottenham’s current young stars. Daniel Levy could facilitate the deal with the potential money brought in should Alderweireld be sold.
