OPINION

There has been intense speculation recently surrounding the future of the Real Madrid hotseat, and Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino was firmly in the spotlight as he became a prime target for the Spanish giants.

After making a last ditch attempt, as reported by El Pais, on Wednesday night to lure the Argentine from North London, the La Liga outfit then confirmed the recently sacked boss of Spain, Julen Lopetegui, as their new manager.

However, Real Madrid’s pursuit of Pochettino has been relentless and it seemed they were adamant that they would land their man regardless.

They were met by a firm stance by Daniel Levy, and rightly so – the Spaniards were reluctant to let this one go. The question is though, why were they so confident that Pochettino was their man?

He clearly has the attributes of a great manager, which he has displayed for Tottenham in recent years after they snapped him up from Southampton. Pochettino, nevertheless, is the right man for Spurs – but not for Real Madrid.

The Spaniards are a club renowned for their trophy-winning pedigree, having won three consecutive Champions League titles – Pochettino, on the other hand, has not had the experience of winning anything.

It does not make sense why a club who has won a number of league and domestic titles wants a manager who has zero trophies to his name, and they would be setting themselves up for disappointment.

This is why the man from Argentina is the right man for Spurs, but not Real Madrid – he has not been tested at the highest level and at Real Madrid, you always have to be at the highest level with the likes of Barcelona constantly on your heels.

Other candidates for the top job, such as current Germany boss Joachim Low, have also not had experience at the highest level with a club, but he can say that he has coached his country to the World Cup in 2014. That alone made him better qualified for the job.

Now Real Madrid have their man in the shape of Lopetegui, Pochettino – as the right man for Spurs – has the capabilities of achieving great things with Tottenham, and that might even include a trophy or two.
