Real Madrid made a last ditch attempt to snatch Mauricio Pochettino from Tottenham before agreeing a deal with the recently departed Spain boss Julen Lopetegui, according to El Pais.

The Spanish newspaper reports on their website that Real Madrid chief executive Jose Angel Sanchez made one last attempt in trying to lure Pochettino from Tottenham by contacting Daniel Levy, who refused once again to let the Spurs manager depart for the Bernabeu.

However, the Spanish giants then confirmed the recently sacked Julen Lopetegui as their new boss to replace Zinedine Zidane, despite still entertaining the idea of having Pochettino as their new coach on Monday.

OPINION

Real Madrid clearly do not like taking no for an answer in their stubborn pursuit of Pochettino, which means they thought they could eventually convince Levy to part company with his manager. Levy will be furious at the fact that the La Liga outfit had the audacity to approach him once again and will be even more reluctant now to let the Argentine go anywhere. He values him as a prized asset at Tottenham and the key to the club’s success in the Premier League. However, this shows what lengths Real Madrid will go to get what they want, which they did not this time around – not even close. It demonstrates Spurs’ willingness to not back down to giants in world football such as Real Madrid, and the trust they have in Pochettino to deliver the results. Next season, Spurs will show the Spanish giants what they are missing in the shape of their boss as they bid to challenge for the title next season.
