Liverpool are on the cusp of signing Steven Gerrard’s cousin Bobby Duncan after he revealed on Twitter yesterday he’s quitting Manchester City, according to the Sun.

The newspaper claim the Merseyside giants are in pole position to land the England Under-17 international, who is a forward and considered to be one of the most highly-rated players of his age in the country.

Duncan, 17, revealed on his personal Twitter account on Tuesday afternoon he is heading out of City after six years at the club following what is reported to be a contract stand-off.

Good move for Liverpool?

Duncan is an exciting young attacker, who can play in a variety of positions, including centre-forward. The teenager has already made waves at age-group level for his county and became the first England player to score a hat-trick against Brazil at any level last summer when he ran riot in an Under-16 international. Man City have lost a number of top youngsters in the last year, and the exit of Duncan to a Premier League rival will be considered a major blow within the corridors of power at the club. The deal is expected to cost Liverpool around £200,000 in compensation, a low figure for a player with the ability to reach the very highest level. It will be a concern for the Liverpool academy coaches that Duncan has not featured for City’s academy side for months and that he has been training with nearby Wigan, and it might take him a while for him to get up to speed.

Likely to happen?

Yes, even though Huyton-born Duncan will not be able to link up with Gerrard, who quit as Under-18s manager in May to take over at Rangers. Nevertheless, the youngster has taken the decision to leave City and he would not have done that unless he had a blue-chip employer lined up. Expect an announcement in the coming days.
