Everton have appointed new manager Marco Silva into the managerial hotseat on a three-year contract which was confirmed by the club on social media and their official channels.

Following the reveal, Toffees legend Peter Reid took the opportunity to congratulate the Portuguese boss on his new position at Goodison Park, which he takes after having left Watford earlier in the year.

He wrote a simple five-word tweet which said simply: “Congratulations and good luck Marco.”

The former Toffees midfielder made 228 appearances for the club, scoring 13 goals in that time following his £60,000 move from Bolton in 1982, and is widely considered a favourite of Goodison Park.

OPINION:

Reid, like so many other Everton fans, will be hoping that Silva’s appointment is an appointment which not since the days of David Moyes, will actually last for longer than a season. The Blues have become synonymous with being a club which chops and changes, not allowing for any stability whatsoever. But, here they are, with a manager they wanted back in October following the sacking of Ronald Koeman – and a manager that can offer them a fresh and positive style of play. It remains to be seen how the fans will react in the new season when results do not go their way, whether he will be on the receiving end of some serious stick, similar to that seen by Sam Allardyce, or whether he will be given time to implement his plans and get his new players playing as he would want them to. The club owner, Farhad Moshiri, will undoubtedly be getting his chequebook out this summer so that the 40-year-old has the finances he needs to turn the club around as this exciting chapter opens for the Blues.
