Everton have ended their interest in Newcastle United centre-back Jamaal Lascelles and have turned their attention to Middlesbrough defender Ben Gibson, according to the Northern Echo.

The report states that new manager Marco Silva wants to add to the rearguard but with the Magpies unwilling to relinquish one of their most prized possessions for less than £30million, and Chelsea and Tottenham waiting in the wings, he expects to be priced out of a move for the player.

And with that in mind, Silva is now looking further afield with Gibson attracting the Portuguese boss’ interest.

The 25-year-old Boro central defender is rated at £20m which fits in with the Toffees budget much more favourably than Lascelles.

Good move for Everton?

Gibson was in fine form for Boro last season as the Wearsiders climbed into the play off spots and showed signs that they might be ready for the Premier League.

The centre-back was part of a backline which conceded just 45 goals all season, which was the fourth best in the Championship and in a tricky league shows just what a top-quality player the 25-year-old is.

Everton are in dire need of improvements to their defence, which with Ashley Williams at the heart of it, was frankly nowhere near up to the required level.

Likely to happen?

The Toffees need a quality stopper and Gibson is exactly that.

However, the enforcer is under contract at the Riverside until 2022 so the Blues will have to meet Boro’s £20m valuation as they will be in no rush to sell unless their fee is matched.

At 25, it is likely that the defender will want to test his ability in the Premier League and now that he is in his prime, it is the time to make it happen.
