Celtic expect bidding war over Stuart Armstrong

|

Celtic are expecting a bidding war over Stuart Armstrong, as a host of Premier League clubs have shown interest in the midfielder, according to the Daily Record.

With one year to go on his Hoops contract, the 26-year-old is a hot commodity with Crystal Palace, Southampton and Brighton set to battle it out for his signature.

Armstong finds himself in a similar position to last season, wherein, following a six-month standoff between the player and club, a one-year extension was agreed; however, this time around it has been decided that there will be no extension.

The report states that Celtic will actively encourage offers to facilitate a move, as it is unlikely that any further contract agreement would be reached, so Celtic do not want to lose him for a free transfer at the end of his current contract.

Good move for Celtic?

Yes.

Celtic will receive seven-figure sum bids for the Scotland international, who only managed to start 15 league games last season, with a further 12 appearances coming from the bench.

It seems that last Summer’s contract stand-off could have actually been beneficial, as the extra year on his contract could stand to increase his value.

Armstrong’s influence on the pitch has been diminished as the meteoric rise of Callum McGregor has meant less game time, so now seems the perfect time to sell.

Likely to happen?

Yes.

If Celtic do not finalise a sale, then Armstrong could walk into his dream move by means of a free transfer next summer, which would be a disaster for the club.

Celtic need to capitalise on the vast interest in the 26-year-old, and it is reported that Southampton have been a long-term admirer.

Armstrong wants to leave to secure his dream move to the Premier League, so this one seems set to happen.
