Newcastle boss Rafael Benitez is keen to reunite with Crystal Palace winger Andros Townsend in a shock deal that would bring him back to St James’ Park, according to South London Press and Mercury.

The newspaper reports on their website that the Toon are are eager to bring back the 5’8″ (source: Transfermarkt) flyer to Newcastle in a deal that would surprisingly reunite the 26-year-old with his former manager.

The former England international joined Crystal Palace in 2016 for £15 million after only starting 12 games for Newcastle, quickly becoming a favourite of the Toon Army during his time on Tyneside, but Benitez has insisted that he never wanted Townsend to leave the club – and there was nothing he could have done to prevent the departure.

Good move for Newcastle?

Benitez appears to be keen on the Crystal Palace winger, and there is no wonder – of the 12 games he started at Tyneside, 8 of them were under the Spaniard.

Benitez never wanted him to leave, and believes that Townsend has the ability to shine at Newcastle after helping him score goals again.

The experience he has gained at the Eagles while playing up front with Wilfred Zaha may just be what he needs to prove to the Newcastle faithful that he is a worthy signing.

Likely to happen?

With the club interested in a deal to bring the winger back to Newcastle, do not be surprised if a move was on the cards soon.

Townsend would surely jump at the chance to work with Benitez again at a club who can secure a top ten finish in the Premier League.

It would be the perfect opportunity for both parties seeming as Benitez is keen to work with Townsend again, and this may just get the ball rolling in a thus far slow transfer window for the club.
