Aston Villa fans have been reacting on social media to a report from Football Insider which revealed that Stoke City had commenced talks with Villa James Chester over a potential move to the Potters.

The centre-back was the mainstay of the Villains defence last term as he featured in every one of the clubs 46 championship matches playing all 90 minutes of each game – which is perhaps why supporters were against the idea of a transfer.

The Birmingham club are under immense pressure to meet financial fair play regulations as reports of cash flow problems continue to overshadow Villa Park.

With a meeting on the cards due to take place with EFL chief executive Shaun Harvey, according to The Telegraph, and a potential lawsuit in the offing after constructive dismissal claims from Keith Wyness which could exacerbate their problems and cost the club more money, Steve Bruce could be forced into sanctioning the exit of one of the Villa fans’ favourites.

For the most part though, supporters were laughing off the claims made by Football Insider, as they could not understand why a player of Chester’s stature would be tempted to leave for another Championship club, seeing it as a step sideways rather than forwards for the Warrington-born defender.

Here is a round of some of the reactions on Twitter from fans in response to suggestions that the 29-year-old could be on the verge of a switch:
