Rangers midfielder Carlos Pena has been attracting shock interest from other clubs – even though he has checked into rehab and is due to remain there for around a month.

Pena, 28, has had issues with alcohol since joining Cruz Azul on loan in January and has made just seven appearances across all competitions for Pedro Caixinha’s side.

However his agent Salvador Necochea has confirmed that there are still clubs looking to sign the Mexico international, whose loan deal at Cruz Azul does not expire until the end of the year.

Necochea added that he wants talks with Rangers to see if he can reach a restitution over his client’s future at Ibrox.

“Already some teams have expressed an interest in him because that they know Carlos is trying to resume his life and career,” he said, as quoted by the Daily Record.

“We will communicate with Rangers to see if we can resolve the matter of the remainder of his contract.

“Carlos wants to solve his issues and is committed to doing that. That’s the most important thing right now for him and his family.”

The Scottish Sun has previously reported that Pena earns £26,000-a-week in his deal at Ibrox, with half of it being paid for by Cruz Azul.

OPINION

It is a major shock that a player who has been in such dreadful form, is on high wages, has suffered with alcoholism and is in rehab is still managing to attract attention from other clubs. If there are permanent offers that come along for Pena, Rangers must take them no matter what the cost is. Having joined last year for over £2million, Pena was Caixinha’s biggest signing at Ibrox, and also his biggest flop. He was slow, lethargic and did not seem bothered. The midfielder somehow still managed to score four goals in his 12 Scottish Premiership appearances, but they are really the only positives in what was a diabolical few months in Glasgow. Things should have got better on his return to Mexico, but they haven’t. Now is a time to stand by Pena though as he tries to fight against some major personal issues he has had. However if there’s a chance to sell him off, Mark Allen and Steven Gerrard need to take it.
