Leeds United are not interested in signing Crusaders attacker Gavin Whyte, according to the Yorkshire Post.

Sky Sports has previously reported that Leeds were in talks with the Northern Irish champions over signing the 22-year-old winger, however in a major development, the regional newspaper has claimed that report is wide of the mark.

Whyte has been in stunning form this season as he helped Crusaders win the league title by scoring 22 goals and supplying eight assists in 38 appearances in all competitions.

OPINION

Whyte’s form would suggest that there should be interest in him after he was involved in 30 goals this season as Crusaders won the Northern Irish Premiership. However there is very little chance that he would come anywhere near to replicating that form in England due to the major gulf in class between the league in Northern Ireland and the rest of the English Football League. Whyte would make a good signing for someone, but just not Leeds as it would be hard to see him being able to get into the first team on a regular basis. There will surely be interest from League One or League Two, but the Championship would more than likely be a step too high for the Crusaders ace. Leeds could do with a bit of extra depth out wide. There are players in that position like Hadi Sacko and Pawel Cibicki who need shifting out this summer, so getting rid of them and finding replacements should be high on Paul Heckingbottom and Victor Orta’s agenda.
