Tottenham are on the verge of securing a swoop for Barcelona’s young playmaker Riqui Puig this summer after holding crucial talks for his capture, according to a report.

Spanish publication Sport claim on their website that the 18-year-old midfielder has had Mauricio Pochettino drooling over his abilities and that Spurs are one of many teams who have made contact over the youngster’s capture.

Puig, who has come through the Catalan side’s youth system, has played 10 times for the under-19 side this season, scoring three goals and chipping in with three assists, while he has also turned out for the reserve side at the Nou Camp.

It is said that talks with Spurs are advanced and that a final decision is set to be made over the coming days.

Good move for Tottenham?

Anyone coming from Barcelona’s academy is going to have an excellent education in terms of their footballing ability and knowledge, and it seems that a lot of clubs are keen on taking Puig from the Catalan giants this summer.

Spurs have a strong youth team but there are always room for improvements and obviously Pochettino believes the 18-year-old would be just that.

Whether fans would see him in the first team next season remains to be seen but there is no harm in strengthening for the future, and considering the emergence of Harry Winks, the Spurs boss and his team obviously knows how to get the best out of young midfielders.

Likely to happen?

It seems more a case of when, not if, Tottenham get their man and only a surprise turnaround from the player himself would stop this one getting over the line.

The midfielder is ready to depart and in joining Tottenham he would know that he is very much wanted by the man in charge, and that could be important in swaying his decision.

Nothing is concrete yet but it seems fans should keep their eyes peeled for an announcement any time now.
