In what is a first for a number of seasons in the Premier League, Newcastle United fans actually have a lot of choice in picking a player of the season.

There have been a number of brilliant performances from the Magpies’ stars, all for very different reasons – from Jonjo Shelvey’s creativity in the middle of the park, Jamaal Lascelles’ resolute defending or Kenedy’s electric qualities in attack.

The Toon Army will likely spend much of the summer deliberating over their star performer, but one man who will likely miss out on the talks – despite his brilliant performances – is Paul Dummett.

The left back was injured on day one of the season and his long term absence saw Javi Manquillo take the role, albeit it with limited success.

The Welsh defender’s return marked an improvement in performances and results for the Magpies, and only highlighted just how much a new left back is needed.

With the summer window here, it is time for Rafael Benitez to start hunting around, and he could do a lot worse than pouncing on Southampton’s Matt Targett, who has been on loan at Fulham since January, revolutionising their game.

The 22-year-old, a graduate of the Saints’ youth system, has been a driving force behind the Cottagers’ push for promotion, losing all but two of his 20 outings as the London club showed some red hot form on the way to the play off final.

He looks far too comfortable for the Championship and it is time for him to play in the Premier League, and with Newcastle seeking a new left back, he must be one of Benitez’s top targets whether on loan or on a permanent deal.
