Steven Gerrard may look for written assurances on a transfer budget from Rangers before accepting an offer to become their next manager, according to Sky Sports News.

SSN reporter Keith Downie made the claim while discussing the next steps in negotiations regarding the club’s efforts to make Gerrard their next manager, with the Liverpool legend crucially looking for financial guarantees.

Gerrard himself confirmed while working as a pundit for BT Sport on Tuesday that positive talks had been held with the club and the plan was to pick them up later in the week, with discussions set to begin again in the next day or so.

Reporting from Ibrox on Sky Sports News, Downie said: “It is my understanding that Rangers remain confident they’ve landed their man, their number one target in Steven Gerrard. But he is keen to get assurances, perhaps even written assurances, from Rangers in terms of a transfer budget moving forward.”

The full update on the situation can be seen in Sky Sports Scotland’s tweet below:

OPINION

You would not blame Gerrard for seeking such crucial guarantees from Rangers considering the dire financial situation they have found themselves in during recent years. There is also the obvious need for funds if he wants to mount a credible challenge to Celtic’s dominance at Ibrox, with the current squad in need of a massive overhaul. In truth it looks like an impossible job for someone so inexperienced, with the amount of work needed at the club being extremely high. There is a lot of deadwood that needs shipping out, and there are several players who need to buck up their ideas or they will be walking out the exit door as well. It will be interesting to see just how much Gerrard does get to spend should he take the job, with the club spending close to £10million last summer on several players who have flopped at Ibrox. Rangers cannot afford the same situation to repeat itself under Gerrard, and director of football Mark Allen will no doubt be assisting with recruitment.
