Rangers chairman Dave King has called on the Scottish FA to suspend board member Gary Hughes for referring to Gers fans as “the great unwashed” in 2006

The Daily Record has quoted Celtic-mad Hughes as hitting out at Rangers fans in an old magazine in which he also confirmed himself as a Hoops supporter.

Since reading the comments, Ibrox chief King has responded instantly to demand answers from the SFA.

“I can confirm receipt of information, that would appears to be credible, and which merits immediate and thorough independent investigation,” said King, as quoted by the Daily Record.

“Mr Hughes should be suspended pending this investigation. I also believe steps must be taken to ascertain whether any other SFA individuals were aware of what Mr Hughes said about Rangers supporters before he was appointed a non-executive director of the governing body in 2015.

“It is important to discover if there has been a breach of the SFA duties and responsibilities to all clubs.”

OPINION

King has absolutely every right to call on this investigation because it can show clear bias against Rangers when someone has so openly trash-talked the club in the past. Scottish football is like a never-ending soap opera and this definitely won’t be the last time a chairman is calling on answers from the Scottish FA about their board members. This will be an unwelcome distraction for King, who has a lot of work to do this summer to help Steven Gerrard put together a squad that is capable of improving in the Scottish Premiership. After previously confirming that there will be just £6million pumped into the club via a ‘share issue’ and adding that there are no external investors, King has to find a way to pad out the Ibrox bank accounts, otherwise the club will be left even further behind Celtic, who are bound to continue to strengthen their squad.
