Stoke City goalkeeper Jack Butland is the most likely shot stopper to be joining Liverpool this summer as Jurgen Klopp plots as many as four new signings, according to a report.

The Independent claim on their website that the Potters’ 6’4″ colossus is topping a number of names on the German manager’s shortlist as he looks to bolster both his defence and attack with up to four new signings, the heart of the defence the priority over the next couple of months.

Newcastle’s Jamaal Lascelles and Burnley’s James Tarkowski are said to be the number one targets for the Reds and that Klopp and the board will work hard to get at least one of the central powerhouses to link up with the likes of Virgil Van Dijk next season.

Good move for Liverpool?

A new goalkeeper certainly seems like a must-buy for the Reds but Butland’s arrival will almost certainly see Loris Karius drop down to second choice, for the Stoke man will not want to be playing backup if and when he moves.

If Klopp wants the German shot stopper to remain in contention, then he will have to find someone who is happy to play as second choice.

However, out of the pair, Butland certainly seems the safer pair of hands, and would be a great buy.

As for the two centre backs, both are consistent performers and either would bring a dominating presence to a Liverpool defence lacking in imposing figures.

Likely to happen?

Butland seems a near-certainty to leave Stoke after their relegation but it will still cost a pretty penny to prise him away, considering he is one of their top stars.

Liverpool may well baulk at the asking price set on his head and move on to other targets.

As for Lascelles and Tarkowski, both are prize possessions at their respective clubs and again, only a premium price would convince them to sell up.

The Reds are targeting top talent, but it comes at a price.
