Rangers are desperate to seal a deal for Swansea City striker Oli McBurnie while Leeds United’s focus lies on Abel Hernandez instead of the Scottish international, according to a reliable journalist.

The Yorkshire Evening Post’s Phil Hay has claimed on his personal Twitter account that the Scottish and English sides are running in the same circles when it comes to attacking targets, although the Whites are prioritising the Hull City man, available on a free this summer, instead of the Swans’ forward.

McBurnie, 21, spent the second half of the season on loan at Barnsley, playing for some time under new Leeds boss Paul Heckingbottom, scoring nine goals, and the Whites man is reportedly keen to reunite with his former star.

Good move for Leeds and Rangers?

Kicking off with Leeds, Hernandez is certainly a different calibre of striker to who they already have on their books and is a more proven hitman than McBurnie.

On a free but demanding hefty wages, he scored eight goals in 10 games as injuries decimated his season, but now he is back fit and firing, would be a huge improvement for Heckingbottom – even if the boss wants the two-cap Scotland striker instead/as well.

As for Rangers, they could also do with some firepower up front and McBurnie seems to fit the bill, for he would certainly be in with more of a chance to adding to his international appearances.

Taking his form in England north of the border should not be too much of a problem and he can be the next piece in the puzzle as Steven Gerrard plots his revolution.

Likely to happen?

This is where things get complicated.

Leeds are being hugely ambitious with Hernandez and there is every chance another club, perhaps from the Premier League, sinks their hopes of catching him.

If that is the case, then they could well turn to McBurnie, which in turn would torpedo Rangers’ chances of snapping up the 21-year-old.

The Light Blues will have to move fast for him and get him tied up before the Whites have a chance to rejoin the hunt.
