Celtic fans on social media slammed Dedryck Boyata after he made comments that put his long-term future at the club in doubt.

The Scottish Sun reported on Thursday that the 27-year-old enforcer had held talks with Celtic about signing a new contract, but had so far refused to commit his long-term future to the Hoops.

Boyata is about to enter the final year of his contract with his current deal set to expire in May 2019.

However the newspaper quoted the defender as revealing that he is no rush to tie himself to the club, despite describing his time in Scotland as good.

“I’m not in a rush. Of course, being there, it’s good. But I don’t know what is going to happen in the future,” said Boyata as quoted by the Scottish Sun.

“It doesn’t really depend on them or even me, we will just see what happens.”

Boyata has been regular member of Brendan Rodgers’ side this season, making 30 appearances across all competitions during this campaign.

The centre-back would have played even more games if he hadn’t spent five weeks on the sidelines with a knee injury.

Boyata recently returned to action, after his injury, during the 3-2 victory over Rangers and the enforcer appeared to be at the fault for the Gers’ opening goal.

Due to displays like the one against the Gers, several Celtic fans took to Twitter to share their anger that Boyata was the one holding up contract negotiations.

One supporter tweeted that the 27-year-old should be begging for an extension, while another shared that they thought the defender must be deluded in order to reject Celtic.
