Manchester United have joined Tottenham in the race to sign Watford midfielder Abdoulaye Doucoure in the summer, according to the Daily Star.

The newspaper claims that Jose Mourinho’s outfit are the latest Premier League team to show an interest in the 25-year-old.

It is understood that Man United are keeping tabs on the £40million-rated midfield enforcer following on from his impressive performances in the English top flight this season.

The report details that Spurs, Liverpool and Arsenal have already been casting their eye over the Frenchman, meaning there could be a mad transfer scrap in the summer for his signature.

It is believed that Watford will not sell their central midfielder on the cheap as he has become integral to Javi Gracia’s side.

Good move for Spurs?

Spurs do already have several top quality options in the middle of the park, but Doucoure would be an upgrade on Moussa Sissoko and could be useful.

He has enjoyed a sensational campaign for Watford and has seven goals plus three assists already in the Premier League.

The midfielder is also renowned for his physical strength and defensive traits, which have seen him thrive in England.

Spurs should certainly be in the mix for him, but a near-£40million price would be too much to pay at this point as he is yet to really prove his worth over a long period and the money would be a gamble.

Likely to happen?

Spurs have been linked with Doucoure quite a bit recently and it appears there is genuine interest ahead of the summer window.

However, the arrival of Man United into the race could block any potential move to North London as Mourinho’s side are known to be in the market for two midfield signings in the summer.
